Find Rabbi Nachman

The Empty Hand

The teaching, in one lineThe world chases a closed fist that holds nothing. Chase only what's real.

“Have you ever chased something that felt so real… only to catch it, and find nothing there?”

Sit with it

Rabbi Nachman compares the Evil Urge to a prankster running through a crowd with his fist closed. Each person imagines it holds the thing he wants most, and they all run after him. Then he opens his hand, and it is empty.

Worldly pleasures are like sunbeams in a dark room: they look solid until you try to hold one. What is worth holding is the light that falls on the page of a holy book.

This week, notice one thing you chase that keeps slipping through your fingers. Spend that time on something that stays.
